In a society that often fails to foster safety, acceptance, and equal opportunities, anyone that falls outside of the dominant culture’s cis hetero norms grapple with additional realities of rejection from friends and family, threats to employment and access to affirming medical and mental health services, and bodily safety.
To add to the mix, any unresolved internalized homophobia and transphobia lead to feelings of self-doubt, shame, and increases pressures to conform to stifling labels and inauthentic presentations.
