Embodied: emphasizing that culture is physiological element of who we. We don’t take these things off like our shirt and shoes at the end of the day. They are integral to identity, behavior, and perception.
Culture: Customs, norms, belief systems, language/s, race, ethnicity, gender, SES, religion/spirituality, sexuality, age, citizen status/nationality and more.
what does embodied culture mean?
why a multicultural clinical theory?
Demographics are much more than considerations or measurable data points. These are not aspects of a person to bring in as an after thought. They shape our client’s realities and our own. When trying to understand why a client does not see a provided reframe or resource as an option, it’s important to ask why this is the case beyond a consideration that pathologizes them further.
I will help you process your countertransference when it comes to understanding how your own race/ethnicity and that of your client’s are playing out within the therapeutic space and the therapeutic alliance with respect to institutional racism, privileges & persecutory experiences.
I pull mainly from Leticia Nieto, PsyD, LMFT, TEP theory of liberation, cultural studies, and psychological dynamics of oppression and privilege and Dr. Kenneth V. Hardy’s several contributions on the topics of cultural and racial diversity, trauma and oppression. I will provide guidance on how to apply intersectional case conceptualization skills that help you to apply what I call my “zoom-in-zoom-out” technique so that you don’t lose sight of micro and macro contexts.
This lens is for everyone. Issues of culture, race, privilege, and power dynamics impacts everyone. You do not have to be a person of color to be harmed by white supremacy and the pervasive biases that are deeply rooted in psychology. White supremacy trades everyone’s humanity, especially those with ‘white’ and white passing privilege, for an illusion of safety and guaranteed access and resources in society. It does this though, at a high cost even for those who may benefit from privilege. It forces disconnect from ‘white’ folks history and by doing so, completely severs ‘white’ people from any of their own heritage. When we are disconnected from our heritage, we don’t know who we are. There are so many vital aspects of the self informed by where we come from and the unique histories of our very own families. The notion that culture solely belongs to BIPOC communities trivializes and depersonalizes aspects of everyone’s humanity as tradable and profitable commodities. This reinforces the divide from people not like ourselves and makes us afraid to speak out or ask questions. Silence is how this oppressive and imbalanced system survives.
This is more than an informative clinical perspective. My hope is that what you learn from consultation with me will help you to deepen your understanding of yourself and your own story and history. I hope you will grow closer to finding comfort in being uncomfortable and experience relief from finally speaking to what you have not been able to before. I hope you find your part in promoting social justice not just in your profession but in your personal life and experience a deeper sense of belonging, connection, and gratitude to madre tierra and others.
Multicultural theories consider and seek to correct traditional Eurocentric perspectives that are deeply rooted in psychology. We all have blind spots. That’s ok. That’s what it means to be human. In order to provide clinically sound and ethical services, we must constantly be working on ourselves. Like our clients who need a safe and nonjudgemental environment to grow, so do we. The healer must be constantly healing themselves.
By expanding our understanding of what culture is, we can better be cognizant of the importance of context and how it applies to our clients and the therapeutic relationship.
